TWO DAY WALK

This is a two day wilderness experience. The first day is a self guided walk of 6 hours. The second day is a guided 5 hour walk. A reasonable level of fitness is required and we recommend light weight tramping boots.                    

The day begins with arriving at Liz and Keith's home in the Akatarawa Valley, 1556 Akatarawa Road Upper Hutt, at 9am.  Your accomadation is the Game Keepers B&B, a modern self contained cabin on the edge of the bush. Cars can be left at this safe parking area.

You are transported to the beginning of the walk by 9.30am.  This self guided walk begins at the Karapoti carpark on a well formed track.  The walk is on Greater Wellington Regional Council forest tracks and old tramways through native and exotic forests.  The trail directions, unique sites and timber milling heritage is explained in the small guide you are given. The track then branches off on to private land and descends into Efil Doog Garden of Art. 

You are picked up from Efil Doog Garden at around 5 pm and transported back to your accommodation to freshen up, relax and enjoy a guilt free dinner!

Day two begins after a hearty breakfast with a drive to the summit of the Akatarawa Road.  The beginning of the walk affords great views of the Kapati Coast. Armed with your cut lunch you set off with Keith as your guide. The track follows an old logging road and descends into mature native podocarp forest.  Along the ridge track there are many beautiful mature native trees, specifically Miro, Rimu, Matai and Beech trees.

At the end of the walk you arrive at the historic twin truss bridges on the Akatarawa Road and are transported to Staglands.   On arrival at Staglands Wildlife Reserve you have the opportunity to explore the reserve and its native bird breeding programmes.  

After returning to your accomodation to freshen up you return to Staglands Wildlife Reserve Log Cabin Restaurant for a gourmet BBQ.  At the end of the evening you are transported back to your B&B accommodation.

This package includes all meals, transport, accommodation, garden and wildlife reserve entry fees. We do ask you to bring a packed lunch and energy snacks for your first day walk. The price is inclusive of GST at $295 pp.
